If you’ve just moved into a new build home and noticed a couple of solar panels on the roof, you’re not alone. Many modern developments now include solar PV as standard – but often it’s only the bare minimum. Most new build homes are fitted with just 1 or 2 panels, which isn’t always enough to make a real difference to your energy bills.

The good news? You can almost always add solar panels to a new build, and it often makes sense to add battery storage at the same time. We recently completed a job for a customer who wanted more from their new build system. With a few key upgrades, they’re now storing their own energy and using far less from the grid.

Why Do New Builds Come with Only 1 or 2 Solar Panels?

Developers often install a minimal solar setup to meet local planning or SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) requirements. These systems are usually:

• 1–2 panels

• No inverter monitoring

• No battery

• Grid-tied only, with limited generation

While it’s technically compliant, it doesn’t offer much in terms of savings or energy independence. Most homeowners quickly realise that adding more solar panels and a battery system allows them to get far more value from the space available.

Yes, You Can Add More Solar Panels

One of the most common questions we get is:

“Can I add solar panels to my new build?”

In most cases, the answer is yes.

As long as there’s enough roof space, and your existing system is accessible, we can install additional panels and upgrade the inverter if needed. Some systems can even be expanded without touching the original setup, by installing a separate string of panels on a different part of the roof.

Before we carry out the work, we’ll:

• Assess your roof space and orientation

• Check the current system and its limitations

• Recommend a panel layout that maximises generation

• Advise whether battery storage is worthwhile for your home

Our Recent New Build Upgrade in Lancashire

One of our latest jobs involved upgrading a new build home that had been fitted with 2 solar panels by the developer. The customer wanted a system that actually supported their energy use, especially with rising electricity prices.

We added:

4 extra DMEGC bifacial panels to increase generation

• An AlphaESS G3 S5 hybrid inverter to manage both solar and battery

• A 9.6kWh AlphaESS G3 battery to store excess energy for evening use

With this setup, they’re now producing more electricity during the day and using it later when they need it, reducing grid reliance and future-proofing their home.

Why Add Battery Storage?

Battery storage is a smart addition to any upgraded solar system, especially in a new build. Here’s why:

Store excess solar: Use your own power in the evening rather than exporting it for pennies.

Back-up power: Some systems provide limited backup during a power cut.

Time-of-use savings: Charge your battery at night on cheap tariffs and use it during the day.

Smarter home: Monitor your generation, usage, and storage through one app.

Our AlphaESS systems are modular, expandable, and designed for both current use and future upgrades. The G3 model in particular offers smart monitoring and excellent long-term performance.

What If I Want to Add Solar and Battery Later?

If you’re not ready to upgrade right away, that’s absolutely fine. We regularly work with homeowners who start with the basics and come back to expand their systems once they’ve settled in.

We can:

• Design the system in phases

• Install a hybrid inverter that’s ready for battery later

• Plan your panel layout with future additions in mind

• Provide honest advice about what you’ll gain from upgrading

Do I Need Permission to Upgrade My Solar System?

In most cases, you don’t need planning permission to add more panels or a battery system, especially if it’s a rooftop install. However, it’s always worth checking with your developer or estate management company just in case there are restrictions on roof alterations.

We’re happy to help with this process if you’re unsure.

Choosing the Right Installer

It’s important to choose an installer who understands both solar and battery systems and who knows how to work with new build setups. At West Coast Electrical & Renewables, we’re:

• MCS certified

• RECC accredited

• Experienced in upgrading new builds

• Known for clean, tidy installations

• Trusted across Blackpool, Preston, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lytham St Annes and the wider Lancashire area

We also offer flexible finance options on renewable installations. You can spread the cost for up to 10 years, with 0% APR available for 12 months and low deposit options to suit your budget. It’s a great way to invest in solar and battery storage without the upfront cost.
