If you are wondering how many solar panels do I need for a 3-bedroom house, you might expect there to be a standard number. In reality, the number of bedrooms only tells us a small part of the story.
Two three bedroom homes can use very different amounts of electricity. For example, one property might have two people who are out at work during the day. Another could have a family of four, an electric vehicle, an air source heat pump and somebody working from home.

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need for a 3 Bedroom House?
There is no set number of solar panels required for a three bedroom property.
As a rough guide, many modern residential solar panels now have an output of around 400W to 500W per panel. Therefore, a system using ten 460W panels would have a peak rated capacity of approximately 4.6kWp.
However, that does not mean ten panels will automatically be right for every three bedroom home.
Your annual electricity consumption gives us much more useful information. You can usually find this figure on your electricity bill or energy supplier app. It will normally appear as a figure measured in kilowatt hours, or kWh.
We can then use this information alongside the property itself to design a more suitable system.
Example Solar Panel Sizes for a Home
The table below gives a simple example of how different panel quantities affect the total rated capacity of a solar PV array. We have used a 460W panel for these examples.

These figures show the rated capacity of the panels, not how much electricity the system will generate each year. Actual generation varies according to several factors, including location, roof orientation, pitch, shading and system design.
This is why we would never recommend choosing a solar system based on a table alone.
Your Electricity Usage Matters More Than Your Number of Bedrooms
When we design solar for a three bedroom house, one of the first things we want to understand is how much electricity the household actually uses.
For example, consider two families living in similar properties.
The first household might use gas for heating and hot water. They may also spend most weekdays away from home and have relatively low electricity consumption.
Meanwhile, the second household could have an electric vehicle, induction hob, electric shower, home office and air source heat pump. Their electricity requirements could be considerably higher.
Although both properties have three bedrooms, designing identical solar systems for them would make little sense.
Instead, we can look at previous electricity consumption and discuss how that might change in the future.
Are You Planning to Use More Electricity in the Future?
Current electricity consumption is important. However, we also need to consider what your home might look like in a few years.
You may currently have relatively low electricity usage but plan to buy an electric vehicle. Alternatively, you might be considering an air source heat pump or other electrical upgrades.
In that situation, it can make sense to consider those future requirements when designing your solar installation.
Roof space is valuable. Therefore, where suitable, we can discuss whether using more of the available roof area now could be appropriate rather than designing purely around today’s consumption.
However, bigger does not automatically mean better. The system still needs to suit the property, household and relevant network requirements.
Does Roof Direction Affect How Many Solar Panels You Need?
Roof orientation plays an important role in solar PV design.
South facing roofs are often associated with solar because they can provide strong generation throughout the day. However, solar panels do not have to face directly south to be worthwhile.
East and west facing roofs can also provide useful generation. In fact, splitting panels across different roof elevations can spread generation across more of the day.
We also consider the pitch of the roof, available space and potential shading. Chimneys, neighbouring buildings and mature trees can all affect the amount of daylight reaching an array.
As a result, two homes with the same number of panels may produce different amounts of electricity over the course of a year.

What About Battery Storage?
Battery storage is another important consideration when planning a solar PV system.
Without a battery, electricity generated by your panels can be used by the property while it is available. Any eligible surplus can potentially be exported to the electricity network.
With battery storage, some surplus generation can instead be stored for use later, subject to the system settings and available battery capacity.
However, batteries are not only useful for storing solar generation. Compatible systems can also be configured around certain time of use electricity tariffs. For example, a battery may be charged from the grid during a cheaper overnight period and used later when electricity rates are higher.
Whether this approach makes sense depends on your tariff, consumption, battery capacity and household routine.
Therefore, we look at solar panels and battery storage as part of the wider energy profile of the property rather than treating them as completely separate products.
Could an Electric Vehicle Change the Solar System You Need?
Potentially, yes.
An electric vehicle can significantly change a household’s electricity consumption. However, this does not necessarily mean you should size your solar installation to provide all the electricity needed to charge your vehicle.
When the vehicle charges is also important.
For example, some EV owners use smart overnight electricity tariffs to charge their vehicle at a lower rate. Meanwhile, solar generation produced during the day may be used elsewhere in the property, stored in a battery or exported where applicable.
The best approach will depend on your tariff and how you use energy throughout the day.
How Do We Work Out the Right Number of Solar Panels?
Rather than starting with the question of how many bedrooms you have, we build a picture of the property and its electricity requirements.
We look at annual electricity consumption, roof space, roof direction and shading. We can also discuss your electricity tariff, battery storage and any plans for an EV or air source heat pump.
The available grid connection also forms part of the process. Depending on the proposed system, the relevant Distribution Network Operator requirements and G98 or G99 processes may need to be considered.
By looking at everything together, we can design a system around the property rather than selecting an arbitrary number of panels.
