Solar panels work well on flat roofs when installers design the system with the roof’s structure in mind. At West Coast Electrical, we specialise in tailored solar solutions across Lancashire and the North West, being based in Blackpool. This includes flat roof solar installation systems for both homes and commercial buildings.

We recently completed a system in Blackpool using 18 x 455W DMEGC solar panels on an Esdec Flat Fix Fusion mounting kit, paired with an AlphaESS inverter and heated batteries.

We planned this solar setup with a compact, tidy finish in mind. The system complies with MCS guidelines and suits the layout and access requirements of the property.

Do Solar Panels Work on a Flat Roof?

Absolutely. In fact, flat roofs offer several advantages when installing solar:

• Panels can be tilted at the optimal angle for sunlight capture.

• Flat roofs give us more freedom when designing the panel layout, compared to pitched roofs.

• Our installers often place cabling and inverters close to the array for a clean, efficient setup.

• A flat roof can be ideal for future upgrades, like adding battery storage.

Installers must carefully consider the design, especially when it comes to weight distribution, wind load calculations and access for maintenance. Thats why it’s important to choose an installer with experience in flat roof systems.

A Look at Our Latest Flat Roof Solar Installation

This particular system in Blackpool involved:

• 18 x 455W DMEGC panels

• Esdec Flat Fix Fusion mounting system

• AlphaESS inverter

• AlphaESS heated batteries for year-round performance

The Esdec Flat Fix Fusion system is one of the most reliable options for flat roofs. It’s lightweight, modular and specifically engineered to ensure airflow and stability – even on windy sites near the coast.

The property owner also chose to include battery storage, allowing them to use stored solar energy in the evening or during higher-demand periods. The AlphaESS batteries include integrated heating, which helps maintain performance even in winter months.

No Perimeter Gap? Here’s Why That’s Okay

On this job, you’ll notice from the photos that the system was installed without a perimeter walkway or gap around the panels. That’s sometimes recommended, but it’s not a strict requirement.

A perimeter gap is often suggested for ease of access, but under MCS and UK building regulations, it isn’t mandatory – especially on single-occupancy properties where safe access is available by other means.

In this case, the roof could be fully accessed from ground level. The system was also designed with appropriate wind load calculations and fixed using approved mounting equipment, ensuring safety and long-term reliability.

We make these decisions based on the individual property and installation type – not a blanket rule. That’s part of what sets us apart as a detail-focused, MCS-accredited installer.

Why We Use Esdec Mounting Kits for Flat Roofs

Flat roof installations require a different approach compared to traditional pitched roofs. The Esdec Flat Fix Fusion system allows for:

• A stable but non-penetrative install (so no damage to roof coverings)

• Modular design that can scale for future panel additions

• Effective panel tilt for optimum solar generation

• Clean, tidy finish with low-profile layout

We’ve used Esdec on a number of flat roof projects across Lancashire including, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lytham St Annes and Thornton-Cleveleys with excellent results.

Battery Storage Integration with AlphaESS

The inclusion of AlphaESS heated batteries means this system is ready for all seasons. While every property is different, we often recommend AlphaESS, especially the SMILE 3 model – for its flexibility, reliability and integrated monitoring features.

Battery storage allows our customers to make the most of the energy they generate, reducing reliance on the grid and keeping usage efficient throughout the day and night.

If you’re planning a flat roof solar installation, it’s worth considering battery storage from the start. It can help you save more energy for your home and future-proof your system for years to come.

Do You Need a Perimeter Gap on Your Flat Roof Solar Installation?

This is a question we get a lot. In short – not always.

The requirement for a perimeter gap often depends on:

• Roof height and shape

• Whether the building is residential or commercial

• How accessible the roof is for maintenance

• The design and layout of the panel array

As an MCS-certified and RECC-accredited installer, we follow all relevant standards. We also use our experience to assess each job practically. Every decision around including or skipping a perimeter walkway is based on mounting specifications, wind load calculations, and thorough risk assessments.
