If you’re thinking about solar panels for your home or business, you might be wondering how long the process actually takes. The solar installation timeline can vary depending on a few key factors, but the process is usually much quicker than people expect. At West Coast Electrical, we help customers across Blackpool and Lancashire move through each stage of installation smoothly, from survey to sign-off.
You might be planning for the next season or ready to start now. We’ll explain each stage of the process so you know exactly what’s coming.
What Affects the Solar Installation Timeline?
The exact timeframe depends on the size and type of system, your roof layout, the equipment selected, and whether battery storage or EV charging is included. However, most residential installs are completed within a matter of days, not weeks.
Here are the main stages and how long each typically takes:
• Initial Enquiry and Quotation: Within 1–3 working days
• Site Survey and Design: Usually within a week
• Booking and DNO Application (if needed): 1–2 weeks
• Installation Day(s): 1–3 days
• Commissioning and Handover: Same day as install or next working day
Of course, these are general estimates. Some installations can be completed quicker, especially if no upgrades (like a consumer unit change) are needed.
Stage 1: Enquiry and Solar Quote
Once you get in touch, we’ll take some basic details, such as your address, electricity usage and roof orientation and provide a free quote. This stage is quick and straightforward. If you’re happy to proceed, we’ll book a site visit to firm up the design.
Our team clearly explains the costs, performance estimates, warranties, and the installation process, so you know exactly what to expect.
Stage 2: Site Survey and System Design
In most cases, we’ll carry out a site survey to double-check your roof measurements, pitch, structure, and electrical setup. We also assess shading, access and cable routes. This step helps us ensure the system is not only MCS-compliant but also properly designed for your property.
However, for straightforward installations where we can gather all the required information remotely, such as from architectural plans or drone data – a physical site visit may not be necessary. Either way, your design will be accurate and tailored to your needs.
After confirming the details, we’ll share the final design visuals with you and issue your EPVS-verified performance estimate.
Stage 3: DNO Application (if required)
Some installations require permission from your electricity network provider before going ahead. We refer to this as a DNO application (either G98 or G99, depending on the system size). We submit a formal application to your local electricity network so they can approve the solar system before it connects to the grid. For most domestic installs under 3.68kW per phase, this is just a standard notification and doesn’t cause any delays.
However, larger systems or those with battery storage may require prior approval. We handle this paperwork for you and keep you informed of the timeline.
Stage 4: Solar Installation Day
This is the exciting part – seeing your solar panels go up. On the day of installation, we’ll arrive with everything we need: the panels, mounting kit, inverter, cabling, and any extras like a battery or EV charger.
For a standard system with no complications, we can often complete the job in a single day. If we’re installing battery storage or working on a larger property, it may take two to three days. Either way, we’ll always let you know in advance and make sure your home is left clean and tidy.

How Long Does It Take to Fit Battery Storage?
Adding battery storage doesn’t add too much time to the overall installation. The battery is usually wall-mounted internally or externally, depending on the model, and connected to your system. This can take a few additional hours, depending on location and configuration.
We often install the AlphaESS SMILE-G3 battery for customers in Blackpool and Lancashire, which is efficient to fit and fully compatible with solar PV and EV charging.
