The festive season is a time for joy, celebration, and plenty of lights, but it’s also a time when electrical safety can be overlooked. At West Coast Electrical & Renewables, we see a rise in electrical call-outs over Christmas due to overloaded sockets, faulty decorations, and unsafe setups. That’s why it’s so important to keep Christmas electrical safety in mind as you decorate and celebrate.

Why Christmas Electrical Safety Matters

During December, most homes use more electricity than usual. Extra lighting, electric heaters, kitchen appliances running full-time – it all adds up. On top of that, many people bring out old Christmas lights or plug multiple decorations into a single socket. This creates a higher risk of electrical fires, blown fuses, and overheating.

We often get called to emergency jobs during the holidays, and many of them could have been avoided with some simple checks. So whether you’re decorating early or switching everything on Christmas Eve, take a moment to stay safe.

Avoid Overloading Sockets

One of the most common electrical issues at Christmas is overloaded extension leads. It’s tempting to plug in your tree lights, window lights, and inflatable snowman into one outlet, but this can be dangerous. Plugging too many devices into an extension lead can overload it, which may cause overheating or trip your electrics.

Tip: Use an extension lead with built-in surge protection and always check the total wattage of what you’re plugging in.

Check Your Decorations

If you’ve had the same set of Christmas lights for years, it might be time to inspect them. Cables can become worn, frayed, or cracked, especially if they’ve been stored in a loft or garage all year. Modern LED lights are far more efficient and safer than older incandescent versions, so upgrading is a smart move.

Before using any lights:

• Look for exposed wires or damaged plugs

• Never run cables under carpets or rugs

• Always use weather-rated outdoor lights and plug them into RCD-protected sockets for safety

Be Cautious with Outdoor Power

If you’re powering outdoor lights, make sure you’re using sockets that are suitable for outdoor use. Water and electricity don’t mix, and we see lots of issues from people running cables through open windows or using indoor plugs outside.

We recommend using a weatherproof outdoor socket or speaking to a qualified electrician if you need one installed. It’s safer and much more convenient than trailing cables through your house.

Use Timers or Smart Plugs

Christmas lights left on overnight aren’t just a safety risk – they also cost you more in energy bills. Using a simple timer plug or smart plug means you can set your lights to turn off automatically. It’s a small change, but it helps reduce energy use and the risk of overheating while you’re asleep.

Kitchen Safety at Christmas

The kitchen gets a real workout during the holidays. From the oven being on for hours to multiple appliances running at once, it’s important to make sure your wiring can handle it.

Watch out for:

• Loose sockets or burning smells when using appliances

• Tripping circuits or flickering lights

• Cracked switches or scorch marks on faceplates

If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to have them checked by a qualified electrician before Christmas Day arrives.

Why Battery Storage Is Useful at Christmas

Energy use tends to spike over Christmas – from cooking and heating to lighting up your home and charging devices. If you’ve already got solar panels, adding battery storage means you can hold onto more of that energy for when you need it most. Even with shorter daylight hours, you can store excess power during the day and use it later in the evening, reducing how much you rely on the grid.

It’s ideal during the festive season when family are visiting, appliances are working overtime, and electricity costs can creep up. With a battery system in place, you’re more energy-efficient, better protected from price surges, and you get more value out of your solar setup all year round.
