If you’re wondering whether you can upgrade your existing solar system, the answer is usually yes. Many homeowners installed solar panels years ago when systems were smaller, and battery storage was either unavailable or far less common. As technology has improved, upgrading an existing system has become an excellent way to make better use of the energy your home generates.

At West Coast Electrical & Renewables, we regularly help homeowners across Blackpool, Poulton le Fylde, Thornton Cleveleys, Lytham St Annes and the surrounding Lancashire area upgrade older solar installations to suit their current energy needs.

Why do homeowners upgrade an existing solar system?

Many older solar installations were designed around lower household electricity usage. However, things change over time. You may now own an electric vehicle, work from home, have installed an air source heat pump or simply use more electricity than you did when your original system was fitted.

Rather than replacing everything, many systems can be upgraded with additional equipment to improve performance.

Many newer homes are also built with solar panels to meet building regulations. However, these systems are often designed to achieve compliance rather than maximise energy generation. As a result, many homeowners find that the number of panels installed isn’t enough for their day-to-day electricity usage, especially if they’re planning to add an EV charger, battery storage or an air source heat pump. In many cases, additional solar panels can be added later if there is suitable roof space.

Common upgrades include:

  • Adding more solar panels if roof space allows.
  • Installing battery storage to store unused generation.
  • Replacing an older inverter with a newer hybrid inverter.
  • Preparing the system for future technologies such as EV charging or an air source heat pump.

Can I add more solar panels?

In many cases, yes. If your roof has enough suitable space and the existing system allows for expansion, additional panels can often be installed.

During a survey, we assess your current system, roof layout and electrical installation before recommending the best approach.

If your main roof is already full, another roof, such as a garage or extension, may also provide a suitable location for extra panels.

What if my system doesn’t have battery storage?

Many older systems export any unused electricity straight back to the grid.

Adding battery storage allows you to store some of that electricity for later use, helping you use more of the energy your solar panels generate. Battery storage can also work well with smart electricity tariffs, depending on your supplier and the way you choose to operate your system.

We install several battery storage solutions, with AlphaESS being one of our most popular options.

Do I need a new inverter?

Not always.

However, if your inverter is approaching the end of its service life or you are significantly increasing the size of your system, upgrading to a modern hybrid inverter may be the best option. A hybrid inverter can simplify future battery integration and support additional renewable technologies.

Every property is different, so we always assess the existing equipment before making any recommendations.

Is it worth upgrading an older solar installation?

For many homeowners, upgrading can be a cost effective alternative to starting again.

An upgraded system may allow you to:

  • Generate more electricity.
  • Store more of your own energy.
  • Better support an EV charger.
  • Prepare for an air source heat pump.
  • Improve overall system flexibility.

The right upgrade depends on your current equipment, your electricity usage and your future plans.
